Man on the street: Why is it so easy to be judgmental?

This article  is a collection of direct quotes from BYU students who were asked a question, "Are BYU students more judgmental than similar college students around the country?' A judgmental person is frequently criticizing other peoples behaviors. After reading their responses include a summary of the main ideas or leave an answer to the discussion question posted below.

"What do you think? Are people in the BYU community excessively judgmental of each other? If so, why are they? If not, why do people sometimes feel like this is true.

  1. I don't really know a lot about BYU students and if they are judgmental. I think there are good and bad judgments, I mean true judgment and wrong judgment. One is something you might need to change, and the other is attacking you. For these reasons, I agree it's okay to make appropriate judgments because it helps you have a better life. Randy Lin

  3. The article was talked about why is it so easy to be judgmental people who are studying at the BYU. First of all, BYU is one of religious groups about LDS. Moreover, BYU students need to keep their policy for maintaining their promises.

  4. I'm not sure because i haven't been envolving at the BYU environment i'm at the ELC. But judging by the ELC community i think so far nobody judges excessively each other. Nobody really cares, but there is always people that likes to critize and make certain comments about other people. The difference of BYU is that has an honor code. So many persons are really estrict and they judge a lot of other people because they are not dressing the way they should but there's really nothing big different. Also behaviors, or personalities. But i think in BYU nobody critizes a lot. I think is the same all over the country. Maybe sometimes people feel like is true because a lot of people in BYU are really religious and strict about everything, and as there is an honor code, some people likes to know if the other people are following the code and if they're not they would love to critize even stupid and little things.

  5. The article talks about what students think about criticizing others. It's easy to criticize someone but he have to put this aside and worry more about our own lives.

  6. I think that people like judgment to other people.but BYU have a special religious mood, so people sometimes feel that they are kind and would not make judge people easily. Before we judge people,we must see around ourselves.

  7. This article said peopel in BYU are more judgmental than the average person. I think it's not. Acutally, I think all people evaluate other people and this is human's instinct. However, the reason why people think student in BYU are more judgmental is religion. Most BYU students are member of LDS, and they want to keep religious commitment.

  9. I agree that judging is human nature and don't think people are "excessively" judgmental in the BYU community. People might feel like this is true, because BYU is a LDS school, and the majority of students and professor are the church members with higher standard and value.

  10. This article talk about people in BYU criticize other people more.
I think that it is true. but I understood that. because they try to believe their religion and keep their honor code. I also respect them, because most group and religion has a their unique rule.

  11. Yes! I think people in the BYU are community excessively judgmental of each other. One of the reasons is because we need to obey the honor code. For example, when people saw someone didn't follow the honor code, then people would say isn't she a member, how come her skirt is so short. Actually I did that sometimes too, but I think I need to change my attitude because everybody has their choice.
